I feel lucky to have been at Northern Michigan University’s student newspaper, The North Wind, when I was there from 1994-1997. Use of e-mail and the Internet by students was in its toddler stage. I worked my way up from getting paid 10 cents a word as a freelancer to becoming managing editor by the time I left in 1997. We took what had been started by a great group of journalists before us and ran with it. In addition to redesigning the entire paper and starting the first online edition of The North Wind, we won first place for overall student newspaper from the American Scholastic Press Association in 1997.
